PREVENTION EDUCATION

The Council's Prevention and Education services are dynamic and wide ranging. The program provides education and information to youth from elementary to college, and to the community.

Through the use of presentations, films, group exercises, and other audio-visual aids, young people are provided with factual information about alcohol and substance abuse. The program's curriculum teaches decision-making skills and the ability to make healthy appropriate choices regarding the use of drugs.

Services to adults are provided through community, civic, social, government, business, and service organizations. The program raises community awareness about alcohol and substance abuse as being a treatable disease. The program maintains a pamphlet library, shows films, distributes information and provides a newsletter.

Specialized services include specific presentations about drug use among athletes, alcohol advertising in the media and fetal alcohol syndrome. Other special services include a community Safe Summer program, Beginning Alcohol and Addictions Basic Education Studies (B.A.B.E.S.) program for kindergarten though grade two, a program for parents called Talking With Your Kids About Alcohol, and a Strengthening Families program.
